Climate change is such a huge problem that I think we sometimes conclude we can't do much about it. While it's true that one person's efforts to live a sustainable life are small, perhaps too small to measure, it's also true that one person can make a significant difference by influencing others.
Most of my readers are public relations students, educators and professionals. All of us are trained, or in training, to be good communicators. If combatting climate change is important to you, you can use your skills, knowledge and expertise to make a difference.
For example, one of my colleagues, Dr. Lynne Sallot, has assigned a number of her sections of the PR Campaigns class to work on issues related to energy consumption, recycling, and water use. They've worked with UGA's physical plant and other departments to reduce the university's carbon footprint in addition to persuading individuals to make small changes, like recycling Coke cans or setting computers to sleep rather than using a screen saver.
Teaching, research, class projects and assignments can all focus on issues related to climate change. All it requires is the student or teacher making a choice.
